Sarah Weinman at work:
For those who care to keep score, I picked up my copy of THE LOST SYMBOL just shy of 4 PM on Monday, had the first 200 pages read by the time I showed up to Gotham Hall for the launch party, finished the book at 9:30 PM, turned in the review at 11 PM and it was done and dusted by 9 AM this morning.

This big question was it any good or just a rehash of devinci?
People of goodwill seem to differ on that point.
I succumbed to Janet Maslin's enthusiasm and bought it and will probably read sometime in the next month.
Not being Sarah Weinman, I can't read it in one evening including a dinner party.
"Da Vinci" to me was addictive junk food I hated mysefl for finishing. Terrible writing, great hooks. Insidious.
I know what you mean. I abandon all my principles, such as they are, when confronted with a narrative juggernaut. If I can get through it quickly enough, I'm there.
But if it takes too long, I bail.
