Soon, the world will be Tulkinghorn!

As the Tulkinghorn aesthetic spreads.... Wm. Hocker of Berkeley, California, manufactures sets of tin soldiers picturing scenes of the Victorian military and the American Western Expansion. I'm thinking about a set of Sepoy Mutineers, myself (as an expression of my anti-Imperial beliefs).

Men and horses of the 17th Lancers are pictured above.

In the 1990s, Games Workshop released an Imperial Guard regiment called the Praetorian Guard for their Warhammer 40k wargame.

I always wanted to take the figures and cut the torsos off to place on a group of Rough Rider mounts. If they had figures that looked like the commandos in "Breaker Morant," I'd have done that too.

Clearly, back to the future....

The number of fictional tropes that only exist in future/alien garb -- beginning with imperialism -- is large.

I know that there are series of novels about WWII that are popular in some circles, but the Crimean War? The Spanish American War? the Boer War?

Only in SF drag.

With the popularity of Napoleonic fiction, can the Crimean War and Spanish American War be far behind?

Flashman at the Charge! I'm sure he's there amongst them! What a wonderful discovery, sir, and what should we make of the place of origin: not London, but Berkeley, CA?

The world's turned upside down....

The expansion of radically conservative fashion and crafts is moving beyond certain restaurants, bars, and boutiques in Williamsburg and Park Slope into the elitist enclaves of Northern California.

In Boston, last fall, I was served a cocktail called the Martinez -- the Victorian forerunner to the Martini -- made with Old Tom Gin, based on an 18th century recipe. The bartender refused a customer who wanted a drink made with flavored vodka. Refused!

It was a fine moment, and a sign of changing times.

I finally went on the site where these are things are sold and Jesus Christ, you guys, are you serious? You don't have anything more useful to spend several hundred dollars on?
