Martin Scorsese's great books list

List here. Limitations of the list discussed here.

I'm 41 for 85. Not good at all. Red-faced omission: "Stagecoach."

Fifty-three for Tulkinghorn, but then my prejudices are much more Euro-centric than yours.

One thing that this list should do to the quasi-idiotic commenters on Anne's blog (friends excepted as always -- and, of course, Meredith always comes through) is to send them immediately to the Rossellini-Visconti-Olmi shelf at the Criterion Collection to watch some god-dammned movies.

This is as good a place as any to point your attention to the Criterion Collection collection at Hulu Plus, which has more than 800 Criterion films, including movies too obscure for physical release.

So is the "I don't like movies" phase officially over?

I'm fine with Criterion, Kino, long-form television.....

Always have been. No need to keep up or read the movie sections of the papers, though. Thank God.

So what exactly is it you "don't like"?

A long list indeed....

If pressed to answer briefly, and knowing how much of an asshole I sound, I'd say that I dislike the products of the American commercial movie industry and the independent wannabe POTACMI that trudge along behind them.

As should be clear, it's a dislike born of disappointment.

Other than looking forward to spending some time with "The Artist" and "Hugo" when they appear on video, there's not much that happened last night that makes me wish I'd paid more attention.

I was glad that the William Joyce cartoon I linked to won the Best Animated Short award.

I also may go see "John Carter" just because it shows signs of being ruined by truly idiotic marketing -- a rare thing indeed when most movies are not as good as their ad campaigns.

The interesting thing is how completely you've reverted to pre-autuer theory (not to mention pre-Sarris and pre-Kael) critical standards.
