Good stuff...
The screenwriters who are of the "School of Elmore" -- let's call out Tarantino, Milch, and the sub-school of David Simon -- are also masters of the extended Elizabethan soliloquy and the banter of Shakespearean clowns.
How does THAT happen?
We've learned that George V. Higgins was an influence on Elmore. so he's part of where it came from. (Cf. the grilled cheese sandwich rant in "Eddie Coyle.")
The chorus of four degenerate gamblers played on "Luck" by Ritchie Coster, Kevin Dunn, Jason Gedrick and Ian Hart fill the clown roles admirably.
